સુન્દરકાણ્ડ્.
અથ પંચવિંશસ્સર્ગઃ

તથા તાસાં વદન્તીનાં પરુષં દારુણં બહુ|
રાક્ષસીનાં અસૌમ્યાનાં રુરોદ જનકાત્મજા||1||

સ|| અથ અસૌમ્યાનાં રાક્ષસીનાં બહુ દારુણં પરુષં વદન્તીનાં ( શ્રુત્વા) જનકાત્મજા રુરોદ||

Then hearing the many harsh words of the unpleasant Rakshasis the daughter of Janaka wept.

એવમુક્ત્વાતુ વૈદેહી રાક્ષસીભિર્મનસ્વિની
ઉવાચ પરમત્રસ્તા ભાષ્પગદ્ગદયા ગિરા||2||
ન માનુષી રાક્ષસસ્ય ભાર્યાભવિતુમર્હતિ|
કામં ખાદત માં સર્વા ન કરિષ્યામિ વો વચઃ||3||

સ|| એવં ઉક્ત્વા તુ રાક્ષસીભિઃ મનસ્વિની વૈદેહી પરમ ત્રસ્તા ભાષ્પગદ્ગદયા ગિરા ઉવાચ|| માનુષી રાક્ષસસ્ય ભાર્યા ભવિતું ન અર્હતિ | માં સર્વા કામં ખાદત | વો વચઃ ન કરિષ્યામિ ||

Having been told thus by the Rakshasa women, very much afraid Vaidehi with her voice choking with tears spoke thus. 'A human being cannot be the wife of a Rakshasa. You can all freely eat me. I will not do what you say'.

સા રાક્ષસીમધ્યગતા સીતા સુરસુતોપમા|
ન શર્મ લેભે દુઃખાર્તા રાવણેન તર્જિતા||4||
વેપતેસ્માધિકં સીતા વિશન્તીવાઙ્ગ માત્મનઃ|
વને યૂધપરિભ્રષ્ટા મૃગી કોકૈ રિવાર્દિતા ||5||
સા ત્વશોકસ્ય વિપુલાં શાખા માલમ્બ્ય પુષ્પિતામ્|
ચિન્તયામાસ શોકેન ભર્તારં ભગ્નમાનસા||6||

સ|| રાક્ષસી મધ્યગતા રાવણેન તર્જિતા સુરસુતોપમા સા સીતા દુઃખાર્તા શર્મ ન લેભે ||વને યૂધપરિભ્રષ્ટા કોકૈઃ આર્દિતા મૃગી ઇવ આત્મના અઙ્ગં વિશન્તિઃ અધિકં વેપતે સ્મ||શોકેન ભગ્નમાનસ્ય સા અશોકસ્ય પુષ્પિતાં વિપુલં શાખામ્ આલમ્બ્ય ભર્તારં ચિન્તયામાસ||

Surrounded by the Rakshasa women, threatened by Ravana, Sita, who is like the daughter of Gods could not get solace. Like the deer separated from its herd and chased by the wolves in the forest, Sita trembling excessively withdrew her limbs into herself. With a broken heart and in sorrow, she held on to the flowering branches of that Ashoka tree and started thinking about her husband.

સા સ્નાપયન્તી વિપુલૌ સ્તનૌ નેત્રજલસ્રવૈઃ|
ચિન્તયન્તી ન શોકસ્ય તદાન્ત મધિગચ્ચતિ||7||
સા વેપમાના પતિતા પ્રવાતે કદળી યથા|
રાક્ષસીનાં ભયત્રસ્તા વિવર્ણવદનાઽભવત્||8||
તસ્યા સ્સા દીર્ઘવિપુલા વેપન્ત્યા સીતયા તદા|
દદૃશે કમ્પિની વેણી વ્યાળીવ પરિસર્પતી||9||

સ|| તદા સા નેત્રજલસ્રવૈઃ વિપુલૌ સ્તનૌ સ્નાપયંતી ચિંતયંતી સોકસ્ય અંતં ન અધિગચ્છતિ ||સા પ્રવાતે પતિતા વેપમાના કદળી યથા રાક્ષસીનાં ભયત્રસ્તા વિવર્ણવદના અભવત્ || વેપંત્યાઃ તસ્યાઃ દીર્ઘવિપુલા કંપિની સા સીતયા વેણી વ્યાલીવ પરિસર્પતી દદૃશે||

Then brooding and with the flow of tears bathing her breasts she could not reach the other end of the sea of sorrow. Trembling like a banana tree in stormy winds , frightened of the Rakshasa women she looked very pale. The long luxuriant braid of Sita who was shaking looked like a moving serpent.

સા નિશ્શ્વસન્તી દુઃખાર્તા શોકોપહતચેતના|
અર્તા વ્યસૃજ દશ્રૂણી મૈથિલી વિલલાપ હ||10||
હારામેતિ ચ દુઃખાર્તા હા પુનર્લક્ષ્મણેતિ ચ|
હા શ્વશ્રુ મમ કૌસલ્યે હા સુમિત્રેતિ ભામિની||11||

સ|| દુઃખાર્તા શોકોફહતચેતના આર્તા સા મૈથિલી નિઃશ્વસંતી અશ્રૂણિ વ્યસૃજ વિલલાપ હ ||દુઃખાર્તા હા રામ ઇતિ પુનઃ હા લક્ષ્મણ ઇતિ હા મમશ્વશ્રુ કૌસલ્યે હાસુમિત્રે ઇતિ ( વિલલાપ હ)||

The distressed and afflicted Mythili with her consciousness drowned in tears, breathing heavily cried shedding tears. The afflicted lady cried saying 'Oh Rama, Oh Lakshmana, my mother in law O Kausalya Oh Sumitra' .

લોક પ્રવાદઃ સત્યોઽયં પણ્ડિતૈસ્સમુદાહૃતઃ|
અકાલે દુર્લભો મૃત્યુ સ્સ્ત્રિયા વા પુરુષસ્યવા||12||
યત્રાહ મેવં ક્રૂરાભી રાક્ષસીભિ રિહાર્દિતા|
જીવામિ હીના રામેણ મુહૂર્તમપિ દુઃખિતા||13||

સ|| યત્ર અહં એવં ક્રૂરાભિઃ રાક્ષસીભિઃ આર્દિતા ઇહ રામેણ હીના દુઃખાર્તા યદા મુહૂર્તં અપિ જીવામિ (તદા) સ્ત્રિયાવા પુરુષસ્ય વા અકાલે મૃત્યુઃ દુર્લભઃ પંડિતઃ સમુદાહૃતઃ (ઇતિ) અયં લોકપ્રવાદઃ સત્યઃ||

' As I am tormented by the cruel Rakshasis here and separated from Rama I cannot live for a moment. Then the often quoted saying of learned that untimely death is difficult is true'.

એષઽલ્પપુણ્યા કૃપણા વિનશિષ્યાં અનાથવત્|
સમુદ્રમધ્યે નૌઃ પૂર્ણા વાયુવેગૈ રિવાહતા||14||
ભર્તારં તં અપશ્યન્તી રાક્ષસીવશ માગતા|
સીદામિ ખલુ શોકેન કૂલં તોયહતં યથા||15||
તં પદ્મદળપત્રાક્ષં સિંહવિક્રાન્ત ગામિનમ્|
ધન્યાઃ પશ્યન્તિ મે નાથં કૃતજ્ઞં પ્રિયવાદિનમ્||16||

સ|| અલ્પપુણ્યયા કૃપણા એષા અનાથવત્ સમુદ્રમધ્યે વાયુવેગૈઃ આહતા પૂર્ણા નૌઃ ઇવ વિનશિષ્યામિ|| ભર્તારં તં અપશ્યંતી રાક્ષસી વશં આગતા તોયહતં તીરં યથા શોકેન સીદામિ ખલુ||પદ્મદલપત્રાક્ષં સિંહ વિક્રાંત ગામિનં કૃતજ્ઞં પ્રિયવાદિનં મે નાથં પસ્યંતિ (તે) ધન્યાઃ||

' This lowly wretched woman who is like an orphan that I am , I will be destroyed like the full boat hit by stormy winds in the middle of the sea. Unable to see my husband, being in the control of the Rakshasis, I am collapsing in sorrow like the bank of a river pushed by the water currents. Those who can see that husband of mine who has eyes like that of a lotus petals, who walks with the majesty of a lion, who is ever grateful, they are indeed blessed.

સર્વથા તેન હીનયા રામેણ વિદિતાત્મના|
તીક્ષ્ણં વિષમિવાઽઽસ્વાદ્ય દુર્લભં મમ જીવનમ્||17||
કીદૃશં તુ મહાપાપં પુરા જન્માન્તરે કૃતમ્|
યેનેદં પ્રાપ્યતે દુઃખં મયા ઘોરં સુદારુણમ્||18||
જીવિતં ત્યક્તુ મિચ્છામિ શોકેન મહતા વૃતા|
રાક્ષસીભિશ્ચ રક્ષ્યન્ત્યા રામો નાસાદ્યતે મયા||19||

સ|| વિદિતાત્મના તેન રામેણ હીનાયાઃ મમ તીક્ષ્ણં વિષં આસ્વાદ્યેવ જીવિતં સર્વથા દુર્લભમ્||યેન મયા ઘોરં સુદારુણં ઇદં દુઃખં પ્રાપ્યતે કીદૃશં મહાપાપં (મયા) પુરા જન્માંતરે કૃતં||મહતા શોકેન આવૃતા જીવિતં ત્યક્તું ઇચ્છામિ | રામઃ મયા આસાદ્યતે ન (યદા અહં) રાક્ષસીભિઃ સુરક્ષિતા||

'Separated from Rama the one who has realized self, my life is impossible like that one who drank venom. Why I am subject to this terrible cruel sorrow ? What kind of great sin I might have commited in my previous birth ? Filled with this great sorrow I want to give up my life. Rama cannot get me , while I am protected by these Rakshasis'.

ધિ ગસ્તુ ખલુ માનુષ્યં ધિગસ્તુ પરવશ્યતામ્|
ન શક્યં યત્પરિત્યક્તુ માત્મચ્છન્દેન જીવિતમ્||20||

સ|| માનુષ્યં ધિક્ અસ્તુ | પરવશ્યતાં ધિક્ અસ્તુ | યત્ આત્મછંદેન જિવિતં પરિત્યક્તું (અપિ) ન શક્યં ખલુ ||

' Fie upon human life. Fie upon dependence.Though I wish to give up life I am unable to'.

ઇત્યાર્ષે શ્રીમદ્રામાયણે આદિકાવ્યે વાલ્મીકીયે
ચતુર્વિંશત્ સહસ્રિકાયાં સંહિતાયામ્
શ્રીમત્સુન્દરકાણ્ડે પઞ્ચવિંશસ્સર્ગઃ||

Thus ends Sarga twenty five of Sundarakanda in Ramayana , the first ever poem composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki.
